In class this week we watched a documentary called "Food, Inc.". The film was directed by Robert Kenner.
Food, Inc. was a very informative documentary about how we Americans are eating today. It showed the lives of different families and how each one is being affected by the food that we are allowing growing food corporations to take over and poison us with. The food industry does not want us to know the truth because if we did, we might not eat it.
The food is tainted from start to finish. There are toxins in the soils and plant seeds where crops start from. This contaminates the fruits and vegetables we eat. This then contaminates the meats we eat because the animals are corn fed. In reality they should not be fed the corn, but it is cheaper and easier to process. Then, to try to remove the bacteria that contaminates the meat, they treat it with Ammonia. We are being fed dangerous chemicals everyday.
The movie features interviews with experts such as Eric Schlosser (Fast Food Nation) and Michael Pollan (The Omnivore's Dilemma) and also with Barbara Kowalcyk. In 2001, her 2 and a half year old son ate a hamburger and died only 12 short days later from E. Coli. She looked into what really happens in the beef industry and has become a food safety advocate and has been fighting to get the USDA to step in and shut down the slaughterhouses and plants that continuously produce contaminated meats but has not been able to so far because sadly, our food industry is also run by politicians.
The world we live in is crumbling before us due to the almighty dollar.
A few questions that I had that were not answered that might be a good idea to research are:
1. How exactly has technology changed the food industry?
2. What is preventing Kevin's Law from being passed?
3. Why is our government not stepping in? Why are these large food companies allowed to chemically enhance food?
